Rigby Lake

Yesterday was a total disaster!
I was on my way out the door to go to a pool party
and ran downstairs to get my lawn chair and low and behold. . .
My basement was FULL of water.
I just knew it was the sprinkling system and I ran
upstairs and outside and I could see the water just bubbling over.
All three of the basement windows in the back were clear
full of water, like over the top of the window full.
I tried to call Wynn to find out where the turn off valve was and it
took his secretary to get him out of a meeting so I could talk
to him. I got it turned off and then bailed all the water
out of the window well. I called our insurance agent and got
the ball rolling. Within 30 minutes ARS were here and
the clean up began.
My carpet was new one year ago this week. (I remember because
it was laid while I was at girls camp) Both bedrooms,
my storage closet and half
of the game room were totally saturated with water.
Ripped up carpet and threw padding away!
My heart just about fell out of my chest to see them cut
right into my new carpet and rip it up.
I think there are about 15 fans going full blast
down there right now and probably will be
for a while. On Friday, the walls will
be ripped out and then more fans set so they
will dry out. They promised me I will be happy when
this process is over. I sure hope so because my heart
is hurting really bad right now.

Last Saturday while I was gone, Wynn surprised me by
moving our bedroom downstairs so we could get
started on remodeling our bedroom.
I was just getting used to sleeping in a nice cool basement
and now we are back upstairs again.

About half way through this FUN process yesterday,
Steven and Brooke dropped off my grand babies
because they were headed up to girls camp.
Oh, my heart aches for girls camp. I'm so jealous
for everyone who got to go this week. That is
where I truly wanted to be. Anyway,
I got the kids right in the middle of all my big mess.
Really, we didn't have a choice, Steven and Brooke
were committed and so was I to babysitting.
So, we just delta with it.

Oh, what darling grand babies I have.
I think they knew my heart was broken in so many ways.
They were dream children and I couldn't love them
any more than I do right now.
THEY ARE THE BEST!

This morning I loaded Camden and Emily up
and we headed to Rigby Lake.
Nothing like spending a day with my Mom
and my darling grand kids to cheer me up.

Trying to keep Camden on a blanket was totally a joke!
So, I just took Camden out to the water and he and Em's
had a ball playing together. Yes, Camden is in his
clothes. I didn't plan on getting him wet but. . .
He loved it.
After the lake we went to G.G. house.
(Great Grandma Hayes)
Camden loved her huge ball and
the cool grass.
Emily loved picking strawberries
with G.G.
My, look at my Mother's beautiful garden!
I didn't get the "green thumb" gene from her.

Thanks to my adorable grand babies for making
the past two days bearable.
I love them with all my heart.

Hi mom!
Well, we're at Best Buy today to do our emails, so bear with me! I'm getting up some pictures for you too.
Well, this week was fantastic! I got to go on exchanges like 3 times this week! It's tons of fun! I got to spend the day in Oildale (The 'Dale) on tuesday, One of the AP's, Elder Bumgardner, came with Elder Scheiss and I on Wednesday, and on Thursday I went with Elder Tate in their ward (They llive with us). It was so much fun! The pictures are thus:

Bro. Snelling and me
Br. Clarke (WML) and me
John Risdon (At the masons meeting) and me
The Johnsons and me
Br. Sears and Sis. Donovan and me
Elder Scheiss and Elder Bumgardner and me
Elder Tate and me

Sounds like your week has been awesome! SOunds like dad is doing well, I'm glad! I keep you all in my prayers. Tell everyone Hi for me! I'm also writing Lauren a letter, so I'll send that to you today! Tell her hi and I'm offended that she doesn't write. :) I hven't got the package yet, it takes a day or two extra for mail to get from Ventura to Bakes, so I'm sure it's on its way!! Thanks so much! you are amazing! I think if you did digital recorders it would work best, but it's up to you. It's just kindof a brain child right now. You do what you want to! Hey, if it's not too much sometime (Not now, just whenever you see fit...) I'm thinking it would be nice to have some new scriptures. I want brown and gold in the picket size, you know? Quadruple combination, and it snaps shut on the front? It's not a need, just a want... whatever you think! And it would be cool to have "Elder Monk" on the front. ?? Let me know what you think.
Umm.. this week we did tons of stuff. We did lots of knocking and talked to LOTS of people! Bakersfield is actually a really nice place, and lots of really good people. We tracted into a lady a couple weeks ago, and we went to their house on Friday to help them do some service. They have a farm in their backyard, and we did tons of work! They are baptist, and they took in two younger girls, and he had a heart atack and had to quit his job, so times are tough. They are way sweet though! We are going back this friday.
We had a lesson with Chase yesterday. He's about 16 and a friend of a member. He's had mybe 3 lessons nd guess what... HE WANTS TO GET BAPTIZED!!! We asked him to read and pray, and he's been doing both EVERY DAY! He's what we call "Gold". I love it! Blessings!
Tell Katie congrats! That is so fun! I'm way happy for her, even though I secreetly thought she would wait for me... but its ok! :)
I'm glad you like your new calling! Its blessings in disguse! :) I love you!
Tell Jarom's mom Hi for me! I hope Jarom's doing well, and I htink Bridger leaves for Frankfurt tomorrow! I'm so pumped for them! Let me know what happens! I gotta hear those letters! :)
In church yesterday the young women sang the theme song from camp, then each one bore their testimony that they gained at camp. I thought of you the whole time! I love you mom, and I know our Heavenly Father loves you too. I'm glad you are such a strong member! Keep the faith!
Hmm... i'm sorry! I hope this letter is long enough! I love this church. It's true! I feel so blessed to be ere now.. I know the Lord is watching out for me! Plus, I love my comp. so that's a plus!! I hop eyou have a fantastic day! I hope to hear from you soon! love,

Fun week-end!

Wynn is surfing!

Last week-end we went camping up to Ririe Reservoire.
Don't laugh, it is a beautiful camp ground and so close to home.
I love it there.
We went up on Friday afternoon.
We just bought us a new tent trailer. We had one years ago and we
have so many fond memories of it. Sam and Hailey bought one and
we decided we needed to be just like them so we bought one too.
Now we can go camping together!
Anyway, our friends, the Kinghorns came up and camped
with us and then we went boating on Friday afternoon
and all day on Saturday.
Yes, the wind did blow but it always does in Idaho!
It really was a beautiful day!
We got to take Emily up with us on Friday and
then Brooke and Camden came up on Saturday morning and
had breakfast with us. We took the kids out
on the boat for a while too.
Kind of hard with a baby.
Emily would just sit and listen while Loren told
her special stories. It was pretty cute.
This picture was taken on Tuesday, July 12th.
We watched the kids while Brooke went to Mutual.
Emily was trying to smile.
A Grandpa with his two favorite kids!

Matt's letter for July 18,2011

HI mom!
Ok so... This week has been fantastic. The best week of my mission by FAR! Let me tell you about it:
Monday - I mostly packed and stuff. We went and talked to a few members and investigators and said bye to them. Bro. Snelling took us to ice cream at fosters, and Fred gave me a bunch of car magazines because he knows how much i love them. Nice! We also got to go into a mosonic lodge and see one of our investigators - bro. Risdon. It was weird to see him in his little apron, but he's way cool. I'll send you some pics soon.
Tuesday - We got up and packed everything up and took it to the curb and took some pictures with Bro. Sears and oggie and Sister Donovan. I love them! and i'll miss them.. Bro olmstead took us to ventura for the transfer meeting! We got there and we talked to other missionaries for a while then... I FOUND ELDER SHEISS! He is SUPER outgoing and tons of fun! At the beginning of the meeting they introduce the new missionaries and then introduce the zone leaders. So, I had to stand up! I think alot of people were suprised! Haha! Elder Sheiss has been out like 2 months longer than me. :) Haha! We drove back to Bakersfield along the Grapevine. Way pretty! It's been pretty cool in Bakes this week, around high 80's-90's, so we feel pretty blessed. It should be alot warmer this week! :) We met with a family - the millers - for dinner, and their son is getting ready to go to byu-i and is dating a non-member and she is taking hte discussions. It was so sweet to teach her! It was a ton of fun.
Wednesday - Since I am also our district leader, I got to do my first district meeting! It went really well, and we have an AWESOME district. I'm pumped! Our ward is about 620 people, with about 320 active, so we have alot of less-active work to do. We go and try to visit members, and if we don't talk to any people, our goal is to talk to at least someone before we get back into the car. So we STO! (Short testimony oppertunity) WE go and walk up and down the street and either knock here and there or talk to whoever's out. It's been a MIRACLE!!! We have talked to so many people! We got to teach our next door neighbor too(We live in a 4 man apartment off of Jewetta. It's actually really nice, like gated and everything!). He's in the military black ops, and he is super cool. What a great day!
Thursday - We just talked to everyone we could. We STO'd alot of people, and a lady invited us into her house while she was making salsa. It smelled exactly like when you do it, and i missed you! :) She fed us chips and salso while we talked about Jesus and the Gospel. Miracles!
Friday - We did basically the same thing. We have lots of lessons with memebers and less-active members and then we spend our spare time finding new poeple and planning out our coming week. We are always busy, and LAUGHING our heads OFF! Elder sheiss is so funny and basically my new best friend.
Saturday - I got to give my first baptism interview! As a district and Zone Leader, we are blessed to be ablt to do that. The man I interviewed was pretty solid, but had gone to jail for 30 days for a DUI Many years ago. So, I put off the baptism date and talked to president Castro about it, and he's talking to Salt Lake about it today. If nothing else, one of his counselors form Bakes will just do it, or he'll authorize me to sign him off, then he can get baptized next week! It was such a cool experience. I feel so blessed to be here now.
Sunday - We were in church from 8:00 to about 4:30. It was legit! We are over the Rosedale Ward and the Kern River YSA brance. The branch had a Linger Longer afterwords, and it was so fun! What great members we have and amazing people to help us. It was an awesome and busy day!
Ok, so my companion. Elder Nate Sheiss. From.... IDAHO FALLS. And.... We know ALLL the same people! His best friend is Chase Phillips and he knows Garrett, Alan, Briger, Michelle... Everyone! So we have TONS in common! It's so fun! Serously we are the best of friends! He moved to rigby when i was in 8th grade, then to utah. His dad died when he was in idaho falls, and his mom remarried, so that's why they moved to the Tah. He is basically the cooles missionary EVER. His enthusuasm matches (Nay, exceeds) mine! He are PERFECT for each other! Haha, so needless to say, i'm in bliss.
Where we are serving is pretty nice. Not too many ghettos, so it's cool. Since we cover the YSA branch, we get to go to the ghetto on occaision, AKA Oildale or "The 'Dale" It's awesome!
I feels so blessed to be here and to have this oppertunity! I'm so happy! Thanks for all your prayers. I love you tons! Ummm... a couple reguests for that package.. Maybe a tape recorder? Would you like that? Elder sheiss (End us all) Record messages for his family on p-days and he sends it home. Maybe you would like that? It's whatever you want. And music.. I would prefer the original, but if you own it ans send the copy, that's cool too. A tiny bit o cash? I love you. LOVE YOU. TONS! TONS.
Hmm... I think that's it. Thanks for all the prayers. Things are amazing here. I miss you dearly!

Matt's letter for July 11,2011

Hi Mom!

Well... bad news. I'm not going to be senior companion anymore. Also, Bakersfield. It beckons to me. And good news (I guess) is I'm going to be a Zone Leader for the Bakersfield Zone. GAHHHHHH. President CAstro called us last night around 9:30 and made small talk for a while. Then, he paused and asked me, "Elder Monk, I would like to extend to you a calling to be a zone leader." My heart dropped! Haha! But i'm way excited! He wouldn't tell me where or who with, but he told me to read some pages in the white handbook about missionary leadership. He also told me that from the moment he met me, he felt good about me and that he trusted me. Wow! That really made myheart swell. He asked me to not tell anyone until the AP's called this morning. Elder Searcy was freaking out, but things are ok. Haha! I didn't really sleep last night, plus i'm kinda sick and has doped up on non-drowsy cold and flu stuff. Grr! I woke up and just layed there and fretted! Haha! It's a scary thing! Then the AP's called and told me I was going to Bakersfield and that my Companion would be Elder Sheiss. He sounds great! But Bakersfield in summer... I hear rumors of 110*... AGhhhhh. Haha! Wow...

Well, your package, i forgot to tell you! The package you sent cost me 5.00!! THANKS! Haha! That made me giggle when Bro Sears came upstairs really confused and said, "There's a guy here that said you he needs some money..." It was funny! So make sure when you send stuff that there's enough postage! :) Love ya!

President Castro made a new rule that we cannot have any copied CD's. I asked about you buying the CD's and making me a copy, and they said that is OK, as long as you own it. He would prefer the original, but whatever you want. Also, could you send me another copy of the Paul Cardall CD? Another missionary in our district has been looking for it and is headed home tomorrow, so i gave it to him.. Im so sorry! :( And if you could get "Come, THou Fount Of Every Blessing" by Motmon Tabernacle Chior. I love it! I had a couple copied CD's from another missionary and I bought 30 blank cd's a while ago to get CD's I wanted, but i'll send those home for you to make me cd's and I destroyed the copies. :) I'm doing my best to be obedient with exactness! I love and honor out new mission president, so it's not hard. Buying the music on itunes and making a cd from that is OK because you own it. No worries! So natalie sould be OK! Please got some music soon! :) Love you!

So yeah, I would love a little love from you soon! :)

Speaking of love, A lady in our ward made me a purse to give to you! She's a great sewer and made me one to give you. I'll send it to you soon, when I get a chance. You will love it! It's so... so... cute. (I think?) Haha!

We got to help Bishop Norris with a baptism on wednesday. It was a family from Northern cali (Hmmm.. I think i told you this in the letter, so i'll stop now.) It was nice.

We got one of our investigators, Anthony< agreed to be baptised in 1 month, but only if i beat him in Basketball... Hmmm.. We were gathering a team, but it felt kinda funny... We were excited! Then we talked to him and his mom, and he decided to let him do it on his terms. Plus he's only 16. It's ok though! We almost got him! ;)

Well, i'm kinda in a haze right now.. I can't really think too well... :) So, i'll let ya go! I love you tons, and please write soon! I know the church is true. :) LOVE YOU!!

Matt's letter for July 5th, 2011

Hey Mom!

I got your package!! Thank you so much. Sorry that we're emailing so late, but we didn't have anywhere to go yesterday, and we're not supposed to use people's personal computers. So here ya go:

Well, I got a typewriter this week!! We found it for a dollar in a HUGE catholic thrift store. It's electric, and it works like a charm. The ribbon gets caught up sometime, but it's kindof a fun thing to tinker with when i get a spare second. I sent you a letter I typed, so be expecting that.

The Risdon's came to church!!!! AGH!!! Finally! They have been promising and promising, but never did. It was Fast & Testimony meeting, and it was without a doubt the BEST one i've ever been to! It was so powerful and the Spirit was so strong. I loved it! The Lord is watching out for us.

Heavenly Father is really cool. He has helped me lots. Whenever things are hard, I go into the tiny bathroom and kneel down and say a little prayer, and I feel so much better. He is so powerful, and he knows how to succor me, because he's been there before. I am learning so much about myself and what I need to do better. Also, I think this is a good preparation for marriage. I think my wife will be more self-sufficient, but I'll probably need some more patience, haha! So please, don't worry about me! I'm doing fine, and this too shall pass. I really think i'm getting transferred next tuesday, so pray for me. Haha! I am excited though. I think a change would be nice. I love Carp, but I am excited for new things on my mission.

SO our 4th was good! We had breakfast at the Clarkes, and he always gives me a Dr. Pepper to take home because he knows how much I love it. :) They are good people. We did some shopping and got some shampoo and soap, then I wrote some letters. We also got some romaine lettuce from Bro Donovan's garden behind the church. He told us to take some if we wanted! It's SOO good! I've been eating salads for lunch alot lately. Sometimes i put some tuna on a piece with some dressing and make a "wrap." Haha! You've got a healthy kid on your hands! That and the pilates.... I'm gonna be skinny soon!! :) Haha! (By the way, I weigh about 10LBS less than when i first came out!) We went to The Kump's for dinner. He is the second counselor in the bishopric, and his wife teaches young womens. They have older sons that live at home and are going to school at SBCC. They also have a some, Karson, on a mission in connecticut. They always share cool experiences he has with us. For example, They knocked on this lady's door, she invited them in, gave them water bottles because it was hot, and sat down. They took the water, and his was opened already. The alarms went off, but he said it was so hot he had a drink. His mouth got really dry, then it went numb, and he felt really sick. She told his comp. to go get their car 3 or 4 blocks away, and wanted him to stay, but he said they both ran outta there. Haha! I'm pretty lucky that hasn't happened to me!

Mom, (and whoever else is going to read this letter) I know the church is true. It's as simple as that! We are part of a modern day work that is far bigger than any of us really realize. I am so grateful to Joseph Smith, and his courage to stand up for what he knew was right. He was a prophet and he ushered in this dispensation. I read a really great scripture the other day (probably more like a couple months ago. . . ) It's 2 Nephi 33:6. It says, "I glory in plainness; I glory in truth; I glory in my Jesus, for he hath redeemed my soul from hell." I love that passage, because it applies so well to missionary work. Our gospel is plain, it's true and we could never do it without the blood that Jesus willingly interposed on our behalf. I feel blessed to be a small part of his great and marvelous work. I know he loves me and cares for me. I can see that through the people that he places around me like my family, friends and now companions and people I can help find the truth. I am so blessed, and I know that we are led by living prophets today especially our chief Apostle, Thomas S. Monson. The words he speaks and the apostles speak are the words of the Lord. I was reading Neil L. Anderson's talk from conference the other day and in it he said, "The sun never sets on righteous missionaries testifying of the Savior." I am so blessed to be a missionary at this time. I love it! In the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.

Well, I wrote a little more in that letter, so be excited. I love you tons, and Thank You so much for being such a great example and leader to me. I'm so glad I know how to wash dishes and prepare food. You are AMAZING! I also appreciate you teaching me how to do laundry. You have taught me to save my pennies every way I can! I love you! Talk to you soon,

MMmm. I have to tell you one real quick thing! The Prince and Princess are coming to Carpinteria this weekend! You know the big royal wedding everyone has been talking about? Yeah! It's them! Haha! They are playing Polo at the santa barbara polo fields here in Carp. It's a benefit event, and tickets are going for a mere $4,000.00! Wanna come? Haha! And we saw an ad for a house thats selling for 33.8 million... Are you guys still in the market? It's open! :) I love you!

Matt

And Also, I don't have a mormon.org profile yet... We haven't got permission to do it yet. But I did find Dylan Ellsworth, you know our student body president junior year? He's serving in the same mission as austin. COOL! I'll let you know when i get one.

Happy 4th of July

Yesterday, July 2nd, Wynn and I loaded up our bicycles and
headed for Driggs, Idaho. Last year we went there for the
4th festivities. It was a blast and thought we would do
the same this year. We couldn't get any of our kids to go
with so we just went by ourselves. Thought we would
go for a nice bike ride from Driggs to Victor and then back to
Driggs again. That was our plan.

We got to Huntsman Springs Resort and staked out our place
to watch the programs later. There were tons of things going on.
We started walking around and there was so much to see!
I might add that everything was FREE!
(Notice the Tetons in the back)
We saw these amazing BMX riders. They were so good.
Yes, he is jumping over a girl in a chair up on top of a ramp.
We even went to the pig races!
We saw a hypnotist, a comedian juggler, a dog show, an antique
car show and even a air show! There were tons of things for the
kids too. Oh, and don't forget the food. . .
Kind of like a good, old fashioned country fair.
We sat on the grass and enjoyed a patriotic concert courtesy
of BYU-I. Oh my, they were so good!
There were tons of people but honestly, not too bad. There
were tons to do and I didn't notice it too bad. I think
more people came in the evening.
Then, Glen Beck talked.
He did an amazing job. No politics, just a good
patriotic talk. I loved it. I feel like a better person
because of what I learned.
Such a beautiful, hot day.
There was a short video about the Huntsman
Institute and it's desire to find a cure for cancer.

The fireworks were so wonderful.
Of course, they were put to music and that
always captures my heart. They had huge
screens and also showed a DVD while the fireworks were
going on. They had veterans from the Teton Valley
telling about their wars experiences.
It totally was so cool.
My heart was touched.

Such a great day
and the
company
was
the best!
